Bloomin’ Female Force Spotlight: Meet Jessica Styles of Safe Steps Alabama

Some of the most important work in a community happens in the space between someone needing help and knowing where to find it. That is exactly the space Jessica Styles has chosen to work in.

Today, I’m excited to introduce Jessica, the Founder and Executive Director of Safe Steps Alabama Community Connections Inc. Through resource navigation, education, advocacy, outreach, public speaking, and community partnerships, she brings people and organizations together so support can be easier to find—and more effective when it is found.

Everything Safe Steps does is grounded in one clear belief: Safety is a Human Right.

Connecting People to the Help That Already Exists

Safe Steps Alabama works with individuals, families, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations to strengthen access to resources and support.

What stood out to me most about Jessica’s approach is that Safe Steps is not trying to duplicate services that are already available. Instead, Jessica pays attention to the places where people are falling through the cracks, identifies gaps within existing systems, and looks for collaborative ways to address them.

Sometimes that means helping someone find the right resource. Other times it means introducing organizations that could accomplish more by working together. It can also mean educating, advocating, starting a conversation, or making sure a need that has been overlooked is finally seen.

The connection itself is the work—and every stronger connection gives a community more ways to support its people.

Meet the Mother-Daughter Duo Behind Safe Steps

Although Jessica founded Safe Steps Alabama, she is very clear that she has not built it alone. Her mom, Roxana Pressnell, serves as President of the organization, and Jessica says none of this would be possible without her.

Together, Jessica and Roxana form what Jessica describes as a “mom-and-daughter duo taking Alabama by storm.” Jessica brings the vision and day-to-day leadership as Founder and Executive Director, while Roxana helps guide the organization as President.

I love that the heart of an organization centered on community connection begins with such a meaningful connection of its own.

Safety Is a Human Right

For Jessica, “Safety is a Human Right” is not simply a tagline. It is the idea behind every partnership, advocacy effort, resource connection, educational opportunity, and community conversation Safe Steps leads.

It also gives people from very different parts of a community a shared place to begin. Families, nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and local leaders may contribute in different ways, but each can play a role in making resources more accessible and communities safer.

The Nonprofit With Its Own Soundtrack

One of my favorite things Jessica shared is that she writes and creates original music for Safe Steps—including the Community Crew song, “Safety is a Human Right.”

As she put it, apparently founding a nonprofit wasn’t enough, so she gave it a soundtrack, too.

It is a wonderfully unexpected detail, but it also feels completely fitting. Jessica brings creativity into her community work and finds memorable ways to help people understand and connect with the mission.

Permission to Do Absolutely Nothing

After a day spent thinking, planning, studying, and working on Safe Steps, Jessica’s favorite way to recharge is refreshingly simple: getting comfortable at home, putting on a good movie or television show, and doing absolutely nothing productive for a while.

Sometimes the best reset is giving yourself permission to stop teaching, planning, fixing, and solving—and I think many women leading businesses and organizations can relate to that.

Something Big Is Rolling Into Madison

Safe Steps Alabama is also preparing for Bowling for a Cause, a North Alabama Community Business Challenge coming to Bowl Madison on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.

The event will give local businesses and organizations an opportunity to compete, support the community and local families, and take home a traveling trophy until the following year. It will be held at Bowl Madison, located at 8661 Highway 72 West in Madison, Alabama.

Jessica’s story is a reminder that helping does not always mean creating something entirely new. Sometimes it means noticing what is missing, bringing the right people into the same room, and making it easier for someone to reach the support that is already there.
